Whanau Ora

Kia ora and welcome to Whanau Ora, the programme that helps you make important changes to reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke in the future, and to give you a healthier life.

You may be reading this page because your doctor thinks it is a good idea for you to join the Whanau Ora programme – or you may have heard about the great results someone you know has achieved through being part of the programme. Though the final decision to join Whanau Ora or not depends on you, and how much you want to improve your own health, we really hope you’ll give it a go. You have our promise that we will do all we can to help you reach your healthy goals.

The year-long programme is free - and we may even be able to help with fees for the gym, swimming pool or Weight Watchers.

Big changes and lots of help

It is not easy to make big changes to your lifestyle, and we know and understand the difficulties you will face. But you won’t be alone – Whanau Ora will be with you every step of the way.

Mary, Whanau Ora Co-ordinator and a registered nurse, will be your personal highly skilled and experienced adviser. She will work closely with you and your whanau, and ensure you get everything you need on your journey to better health. For more information on Mary, click here.

And your whanau can be involved too

We will ask you to nominate at least two whanau, or friends, who will encourage and motivate you as you make your important lifestyle changes. Experience has shown patients with support do better than those who go it alone. Your whanau and friends will enjoy being part of your journey to better health – and they may even improve their own health too!

Rotorua Area Primary Health Services has run Whanau Ora for two years and it has helped many people to live happier, healthier lives.
