Rotorua Area Primary Health Services (RAPHS) uses Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to assist it to manage change and reduce gaps between current and best practice.
More than a set of indicators or measurements, CQI it is part of a broad, sustainable process that we use to satisfy patients and primary health care teams. It is a continuous loop of:
- Planning
- Doing
- Studying
- Actioning
Every month, RAPHS publishes a CQI newsletter for which information collected from members’ databases and status audits is collated, analysed and reported to members in a meaningful way.
This information - ranging from smoking status to influenza vaccinations, blood pressure recording to mental health - is useful to put present health care practices in context and to identify trends over time.
Sometimes the information poses as many questions as it answers, but it highlights the value of coding in measuring population health and of using a variety of tools to direct change. These tools may include:
- Indicators
- Benchmarks
- Targets
- Variance
- Relationship to Annual Plans
- Health Strategy Priority Areas
