Research Presents Opportunities for Better Patient Care

Research is an essential component in improving health outcomes, successful health promotion and for the development of effective health care services. It may encompass clinical trials, observational studies, educational research, audits and other related activities, including pilot clinical programmes.

Our research governance is essential to minimise research risks to patients and the organisation, to ensure regulatory requirements and organisational responsibilities are met, and to maximise opportunities for research partnerships with external organisations.

By conducting and supporting research, Rotorua Area Primary Health Services (RAPHS) strengthens the knowledge base of primary health care and facilitates the uptake of research evidence in primary health care practice.

Research provides opportunities for:

  • Further development of the practice team approach to patient care
  • Practices to work together on collaborative research projects
  • Additional learning and knowledge to be implemented across the RAPHS network.
  • Enhancing capacity within RAPHS through strategic partnerships with other relevant national and international groups.
  • Enhancing and supporting the achievement of the organisational and strategic goals and gaining opportunities for maximising returns on investment in information management

Population health research is about quantifying trends and issues for a population so that health can be maximised at an individual level. At all times, research methodology must respect the doctor-patient relationship. General Practices are the caretakers of patients’ information.
